NH House Freedom Caucus Raises Concerns Over Overly Optimistic Revenue Estimates in Proposed State Budget
Concord, NH — The New Hampshire House Freedom Caucus today expressed serious concerns over the revenue estimates included in the proposed state budget, warning that they are overly optimistic given current economic uncertainties. The Caucus urged lawmakers to adopt a more conservative approach to safeguard taxpayers from potential shortfalls.
In 2009, Democrats crafted a budget based on unrealistic revenue projections, which resulted in a special session a year later to find “new revenues” (more taxes and fees) to prop up the failing state budget. We cannot afford to repeat this mistake. Overcommitting to what we can fund and then inflating revenues is not a responsible way to manage the state.
“We cannot ignore the reality of uncertain economic conditions,” said Rep. Perez (R-Londonderry), a member of the NH House Freedom Caucus. “The federal government is making cuts to programs we cannot predict, tariffs are impacting people’s lives, interest rates remain above normal levels, and the potential for an economic downturn looms. Basing a state budget on inflated revenue projections and federal funds that might not materialize is a recipe for future tax hikes or cuts to essential services.”
The Caucus emphasized the importance of fiscal responsibility and sound budgeting practices, highlighting the need to protect Granite Staters from potential tax burdens. “It’s irresponsible to gamble on overly optimistic revenue estimates when families and small businesses are already struggling to make ends meet,” said Rep. Wherry (R-Hudson).
The NH House Freedom Caucus called for more realistic revenue projections, responsible spending, and a commitment to maintaining the state’s fiscal stability. The Caucus reaffirmed its dedication to lower taxes, limited government, and a robust economy.
“New Hampshire has long prided itself on fiscal discipline and now is not the time to abandon those principles,” said Rep. Turcotte (R-Barrington). “We must make prudent decisions today to ensure economic stability tomorrow.”
The NH House Freedom Caucus stands ready to work with fellow legislators to produce a responsible budget that safeguards taxpayers, funds essential services, and upholds New Hampshire’s tradition of limited government and economic freedom.
